OVERVIEW
What would an OpenAI-powered design system look like if it understood designers’ workflows end-to-end?
In this concept project, I explored how OpenAI could introduce a design-focused AI system that acts as an intelligence layer within the product design process — capable of understanding context, generating artifacts, summarizing research, predicting next steps, and automating multi-step tasks.
Solution
Core flows
Opportunity
OpenAI × Designer OS: A system-level AI that supports designers end-to-end.
A context-aware intelligence layer that understands research, flows, interfaces, and system logic — generating, coordinating, and maintaining the entire design workflow.

…automating repetitive workflows so designers can focus on decisions, not documentation.
Designer OS becomes a thinking partner — anticipating next steps, generating artifacts, and maintaining consistency across the entire product lifecycle.
Product Strategy
Thinking broadly about OpenAI’s AI ecosystem, the future of multimodal reasoning, and how intelligent systems can reduce friction across the product design lifecycle.
Rapidly exploring interaction patterns, workflow automation concepts, and system behaviors across multiple design tasks.
Prototyping and Testing
Iterating with Feedback
Refining flows, system logic, and UI behaviors through continuous iteration and alignment with real-world big-tech design constraints.
1. Research → Synthesis
Automatically ingests interviews, transcripts, documents, and existing product surfaces.

The system:
extracts insights
clusters themes
maps contradictions
links findings to requirements
generates hypotheses
Output: Research maps, insight graphs, and next-step recommendations.
2. Ideation → Flow Mapping
Designer OS predicts required flows, flags edge cases, and connects flows to research findings.

Automatically generates:
UX flow diagrams
edge-case states
system dependencies
alternate pathways
Output: Fully-updating flow systems.
3. System-Aware UI Generation
Aligns with existing design systems and engineering constraints.

The system:
applies tokens
selects correct patterns
ensures accessibility
validates responsiveness
audits consistency
Output: Pixel-accurate, system-compliant UI.
4. Handoff → Documentation
Generates detailed specs, engineering tickets, logic maps, and traceability.
/projects/openai/core-flow-4.png
Automatically creates:
design docs
component specs
flows → screens links
interaction previews
code-friendly prototypes
Output: Engineer-ready documentation across the entire design.
Yet AI exists in isolated surfaces without system-level awareness — creating friction, context-switching, and cognitive overload inside large organizations.

Big-Tech designers operate across:
A design intelligence layer that works across the full stack.
Personalization, memory, context, and reasoning open the door for a system that:
Understands long-term project context, constraints, and past decisions.
Persistent Memory
Knows where designers are in their process and what comes next.
Workflow Awareness
Sits beneath existing tools, not on top — like an OS, not an app.
Ecosystem Integration
Performs multi-step workflows rather than waiting for instructions
